In Massachusetts, a divorce can be granted on the grounds of irretrievable breakdown of the marriage or on fault grounds, such as adultery, cruel and abusive treatment, desertion, or impotence. In order to obtain a divorce, one spouse must file a complaint for divorce in the Probate and Family Court in the county where either spouse lives.
